Growing with time

With time, The Bombay Swadeshi Store found favour and approval from all quarters. A direct fallout was an increase in the number of branches in various locations in Bombay. Pune, Rajkot and Cochin followed soon after. The flame of 'Swadeshi' spirit was kindled with renewed fervor. Mahatma Gandhi mobilized and guided the movement, stirring the masses to subscribe to Swadeshi products.

Businessmen, egged on by the positive atmosphere, started industries that manufactured a large number of Indian goods.

In 1928, the Head office of  The Bombay Swadeshi Stores was shifted to Cruikshank Road, near VT station, where the Municipal extension buildings stand today. Barely better than a tin shed, it bore the heady days of the newly-set up shop, till 1938, when it was shifted to its present location, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Road.

The men behind the mission

The late Sir Munmohundas Ramji ably manned the store's functioning for about three decades, steering it through tough times as well as properous ones. Particularly notable were the years during 1930's - The Great Deperssion and its repercussions, which Sir Ramji bore with fortitude and resilience.

In 1935-36 Shri Moolji Dayal was called upon to shoulder the responsibilities of an Hon. Managing Director. With his skill and acumen, he navigated the stores operations through intensely challenging phases. In fact, it was his foresight that led to the shifting of the Stores to its present location on Sir Pherozeshah Mehta Road. Over time, the location itself would hold the store in good stead. Dayal's diktat that supplies of cotton textile be directly procured from the mills influenced the Swadeshi movement further. Consumers were now assured of quality goods at competitive prices. Shri Jaisinh Vithaldas was the Director and subsequently the Chairman of The Bombay Swadeshi Store from 1948 to 1991. To this day he honours us whenever he makes his cursory visit to the store.
